Severe and long term heatwave to start affecting North & Central India from Friday

The plains of Northern India have been witnessing a poor pre-monsoon and normal hot and dry weather from quite some time with occurrence of scattered dust storms and thunderstorms following few moderately active WDs which were affecting the region on few occasions following long dry lull phases. The weather is once again set to become dry and hot following a prolong severe but proper heatwave which is expected to affect the region from Friday.

Weather synopsis

Weak Western Disturbance (WD): There is a weak WD which will bring only isolated light rain/drizzles coupled with localized instability in parts of North Rajasthan, South Punjab, Haryana and Delhi till 21st May. There are 2 more weak WD which will affect the region after this one however they all will be suppressed due to a Anti-CC.

Anti-CC: A high pressure/ Anti Cyclonic Circulation over West-Central-West India will make the air sink as these systems suppresses rising air, there will be limited t-storms to no t-storms and they spin the air anti clock wise. Hot and dry winds from Thar Desert will be flowing in the plains

Weather features and effects

Heat will rise rapidly across North, Central, North West and adjoining parts of the plains but the peak of the heat spell will begin from the afternoon of 17th May and will continue for nearly 1.5 to 2 weeks

Severe heatwave is expected to torment Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and parts of Gujarat, North-Central India, West and Central Uttar Pradesh as temperature is expect to rise to 42-4° C and even 50°C in some pockets while nights will become hot too.

Severe heat is expected to last till end of May into early June

Heat Range

East India, Kolkata, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and parts of Odisha: 38-42° C/ 25-29°C

Mumbai, MMR, Coastal Mumbai: 37-42 C/ 26-30°C

East Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra: 39-43°C/ 26-30°C

Punjab, North, Central, East Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, W Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring places: 42-49°C or 50°C at some spots/ 27-32°C

Urban areas will get little more hot as these regions are packed with concrete and concrete absorbs more heat and radiates heat during the evening-night

Loo will also blow across the plains

Strong gusty surface winds will pick up dust from The Thar Desert which will get carried into the plains and remain suspended in the atmosphere and also trapping the heat during the night due to dust acting as a green house layer

High humidity along the coast and few places will raise the apparent temperature

Isolated t-storms are expected especially in the parts of the plains during the times of weak WD due to the high heat and localized instability
